Background : There was an old legend circulating around the sailors and fishermen of feudal Japan. Mind you, there are many old stories and legends, but this one involves a young woman. She lived in a poor fishing village with her older brother. One day, her brother fell ill. Without any means of supporting herself without him, she dressed in his clothing and went out with the crew of his fishing boat to earn some money. The crew knew it was her, but also knew her brother as an honorable man.

But, a woman on a boat brings bad luck.

A fierce storm billowed over the horizon, and as waves crashed against the ship among the deep blue sea, a gust of wind picked up this poor girl and knocked her overboard. This is the end of her story. Or is it?

Her brother recovered faster than anyone in town thought he would and sought out his sister. He asked the captain, and he informed him that she had gone overboard. The man wept pure tears. When those tears hit the sea, he wished for his sister to be returned to him unharmed.

The sea would not answer his prayers, as a week later the body of that young woman washed upon the shore. Devastated at his loss, the brother vowed to avenge her death. How does one enact revenge upon the seas? The sea had taken someone special from him. He would do the same to the sea.

Merpeople have always been the caretakers of the sea. Mermaids and Mermen were the custodians of all the worlds oceans. When people had treated their blue homes with disrespect, it would be the Merpeople who take action. This is a story that his grandfather told him, and his grandfather told him, and so on for centuries. If the merpeople were precious to the sea, then he would take them.

He started by pouring oil into the oceans and setting fire to it. This did nothing but waste oil. He continued by overfishing an area, letting the fist rot on his ship and then tossing those fish carcasses overboard. The sea remained at ease. When at last he ran out of ideas, he saw a pod of whales escorting a younger smaller whale to their feeding grounds.

The harpoon shot into the very heart of that infant whale, and the seas roared. As the whales dispersed, leaving their now dead young floating alone in the sea, the man smiled. This must surely incur the wrath of the seas...

It did.

It's unknown how the man managed to fend off the merpeople's attacks for as long as he did, or even how he survived. But when he returned to his village that day, he brought with him only his broken body and a small burlap sack. That sack contained the upper torso of a mermaid.

Legends say that the flesh of a mermaid can grant immortality. They possess within them great magics, magics over life and death. The man took the corpse of that mermaid to the grave of his dearest sister. He dug up her grave with his bear hands as people in the village watched in stunned silence. He took out a small knife and carved off a piece of that mermaid's flesh and placed it into his sister's mouth. As he moved her jaw to chew this meat, his breath became labored.

Moments later he dropped dead, the result of the injuries he sustained in his battles with the Merpeople. As his life left his body, the woman's body began to move. The townspeople ran away, cursing their family as they fled. The woman was reborn, only to see her brother dead at her hip.

If you were to ask Suboshi about her past, she would tell you this story. But, they say every legend hides a kernel of truth in them...
